Terwey Slams Unconstitutional Iran Strike as Fiscal Betrayal of Oklahoma Families

OKLAHOMA'S 2ND DISTRICT — February 28, 2026

Erik Terwey, progressive Democratic candidate for Oklahoma's 2nd Congressional District, today condemned the prospect of yet another U.S. military strike on Iran — one launched without a vote of Congress — as both a constitutional violation and a reckless act of fiscal irresponsibility that will be paid for by the same Oklahoma families already struggling to keep the lights on, fill prescriptions, and feed their children.

“Every bomb we drop on Iran is money — your money. Money that could pay your electric bill. Money that could cover your family’s health insurance. Money that could bring down the cost of groceries. And it’s being spent without a single vote in Congress.”

— Erik Terwey, Candidate for Oklahoma’s 2nd Congressional District

Terwey emphasized that under Article I of the U.S. Constitution, the power to declare war belongs exclusively to Congress, not the White House. A military strike on a sovereign nation without congressional authorization is not only a dangerous precedent, but a direct violation of the separation of powers that America’s founders fought to protect.

Terwey also drew a sharp contrast with his opponent, incumbent Rep. Josh Brecheen, who campaigned on a platform of fiscal responsibility — yet has offered no public opposition to a potential military engagement that analysts warn could cost taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars and destabilize global energy markets, driving up the very gas, grocery, and utility prices already crushing families across eastern Oklahoma.

"Josh Brecheen said he stood for fiscal responsibility, but he won’t say a word about an unconstitutional war nobody voted for. Oklahoma families are sitting at their kitchen tables right now trying to figure out how to pay their utility bills, afford a doctor’s visit, and keep food on the table. Their tax dollars deserve better than being dropped from a bomb bay without a debate or a vote."

— Erik Terwey

If elected, Terwey has pledged to co-sponsor legislation reaffirming Congress’s exclusive war powers authority, oppose any unauthorized military engagement in Iran, and fight to redirect spending toward domestic priorities including healthcare affordability, educational opportunities, seniors’ services, and food security programs for Oklahoma’s working families.

“Your family’s kitchen table matters more than an unauthorized missile strike. I will always fight to keep the decision to go to war where it belongs — with the people’s representatives in Congress.”

— Erik Terwey
